Healthy Gut vs Leaky Gut

The Wisdom Behind Halal (Lawful) and Tayyib (Pure) Series:

The Missing Key to Success- Living Pure

A Deeper Dive into Pure

Islam’s holistic approach to health includes treating our bodies with respect and nourishing them with, not only faith, but also with lawful, nutritious food.  A major part of living life according to the Creator’s instructions is implementing a pure diet and lifestyle.  Choosing real food and avoiding the impure is essential to good health, as our bodies and our families bodies are our amana and a trust upon us.

Tayyib is a very comprehensive word and has a great place in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Tayyib is from taa-ya-ba (ط ي ب) and it literally means to be good, pleasant, agreeable, lawful. The word ‘tayyib’ itself means to be good, clean, wholesome, gentle, excellent, fair and lawful. From these meanings we get the general meaning for tayyib of anything that is good, pure and harmless. So with no doubt in it, it is good for you.

The Missing Key to Heaven and Success

“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.”(Quran 2:168)

The Wisdom Behind Halal (Lawful) and Tayyib (Pure) Series

O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.

The ayah about halal and tayyib comes after Allah (SWT) discussing people standing next to the Hell fire with multiple regrets of following the social norm blindly. When following normal trends, people start to ignore the lines drawn by Allah (SWT) and only follow the lines drawn by the social norms. Allah (SWT) makes a call to all of humanity to consume that which is Halal and tayyib (meant to be used interchangeable) of what He has provided.

Defining the Believers

“And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.” (Quran 5:88)

“(People), consume the pure and lawful sustenance which God has given to you and thank God for his bounty if you are His true worshippers.” (Quran 16:114)

Constantly Allah (SWT) relates those are successful, those that are believers to eating and living pure.

Equal to Following the Messenger? Impure PROHIBITED!

Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him – it is those who will be the successful” (Quran 7:157)

In surah 7:157, Allah (SWT) provides human kind with a formula to success:

Following the Messenger (S) + who live tayyib and prohibits impure = Success

So this is heavy! Allah (SWT) has made equal following the Messenger to living tayyib and staying away from impurities. Meaning if we don’t follow one or the other we will not be successful. So if we follow the Prophet (S) but we eat artificial/GMO ridden food, we will not be successful, and vice versa. This describes exactly what is happening to the Muslim ummah currently. This is now getting serious, as Allah (SWT) has now prohibited an impure lifestyle. May Allah (SWT) help us all.

The Seriousness of Breaking Allah’s (SWT) law….Then Hope ☺

“Eat of the good things we have provided for your sustenance, but commit no excess therein, lest my wrath should justly descend on you, and those on whom descends my wrath do perish indeed” (Quran 20:81).

In Surah Taha, after instructing the children of Israel, Allah then turns to educating the general population about of breaking Allah (SWT)’s laws.  Allah instructs us all to eat tayyib of what Allah has provided and don’t cross any boundaries (kindness to animals, fair-trade, how we treat the planet, don’t be ungrateful/disrespectful. Otherwise, Allah’s anger will come down and seize and completely ravage you. And whoever Allah’s anger comes down upon and shrouds, that person has fallen hard and fast. The words Allah uses literally means falling from a very high place like the sky to be plunged into darkness.

But then Allah gives us hope… “But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.” (Quran 20:82)

Allah has given us hope, to completely cover up our sins. The one who immediately forgives, consistently forgives, excessive abundantly forgives, limitless forgiveness. Only forgiving the one who repents (makes a “U-turn, back to what you were supposed to do without hesitation) and he continues in good deeds and follows the guidance. Allah has given us the path, now it is our choice to walk it or not, right after he talks about eating tayyib. SubhanAllah!

Artificial foods/fake foods/harmful foods/GMO foods, are by definition not tayyib as these foods inflict harm on the body as they have been documented in medical research for years. But before then, Allah (SWT) has directly related success in this life and the next to eating and living tayyib. Allah has described us the seriousness of breaking His law, but if you repents he is forgiving. Alhumdulillah!

What about GMOs?

“Corruption has been appeared on land and sea due to what the hands of people have earned so that He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].” (Quran 30:41)

“As for the good land, vegetation comes out by its Lord’s will, but poor land produces in agony. We explain Our messages in various ways to those people who are grateful.” (Quran 7:58)

When humans fiddle with the crops, then the meaning of tayyib is lost, especially now that big companies engineer taste and create addictions. Allah has told us that if we interfere with His land ie poor land (full of chemicals, hormones, has been genetically modified) there will be nothing that comes from it but pain and agony.

Allah Knows Impurity Surrounds and Tempts Us

“Say: Evil and good are not equal, even though the abundance of evil may be pleasing to you. Have fear of God, you who are endowed with understanding, so that you may triumph.” (Quran 5: 100)

Allah (SWT) knows that we are bombarded all around us with impurities. But he constantly tells us to use our brains and understanding, to know there are not the same. And those that use this understand, will be successful. InshAllah.

Let’s try our hardest to live tayyib and pure. Allah (SWT) doesn’t give us more than we can tolerate. Take one step towards Allah, Allah will run towards you. Inshallah.

Allah (SWT) knows best.

Impurities ARE Destroying Our Future

So let’s talk reality. We are getting sicker and sicker. Yes, the years on our life maybe increasing, but our quality of life is decreasing. Despite everything we are doing, why are we still getting sick? We are getting sick because we are burdening our bodies with impurities. It is not just destroying us, it is also destroying our future. The tread of autism and decrease in sperm count is scary.  If we continue on the current trajectory, one in 4 children will be autistic. This impure lifestyle we are living, is leading to chronic disease in all ages. But what is scary, is that it just getting worse…this needs to end. But first we need to see what are these factors that are leading to disease and why Allah emphasizes tayyib (pure).Impurities ARE Destroying Our Future

“The analysis found an overall 52.4 percent decline in sperm concentration and a 59.3 percent decline in the total sperm count over the 39-year period.”

NPR July 31, 2017

With 1 in 2 children diagnosed in the U.S. with a chronic illness there is no time to lose…and it’s just getting worse.

We know that chronic disease is due to inflammation. Our lifestyle is key in preventing and healing chronic disease and inflammation! Yes, genes may be a factor but your environment can turn those genes on and off (epigenetics)! With bad diets, chemicals in our environment, increased stress, lack of sleep, bad social environment and a lack of connection with the soul, can all lead to inflammation, leading to chronic inflammation!

Why is chronic disease.- Holistic Mom MD

Impurities are making our future sick

They are all around us…causing sickness

With impurities directly related to chronic disease, let’s talk about the specific impurities that are in our foods and how they can lead to chronic disease.

Artificial Sweeteners Artificial sweeteners are synthetic chemicals and have been shown to cause allergic reactions and various physical ailments leading to gut irritation, insulin resistance, and inflammation. Weight gain, neurotoxin (aspartame), cause hunger, gas, bloating, headaches, migraines, CVD and type 2 DM, metabolic syndrome, worsening the obesity epidemic, damages gut flora, and cause hunger (leading to leptin resistance).  1,2, 3,4,5
Food Additives/Artificial Flavors/Colors Anything artificial causes inflammation. Food additives cause uncontrollable hunger and binge eating, inflammation and gut issues, cancer, and changes genes.6 In an animal study, combinations of dyes and other additives reduced the detoxification abilities of cells and caused damage to the liver.

Red # 40- which is the most widely used dye, may accelerate the appearance of immune system tumors

Blue # 2 – was linked to brain tumors

Yellow # 5 – changes epigenetics but it’s also linked to hyperactivity, hypersensitivity and other behavioral effects in children. They are also xenoestrogens, which disrupt our children’s hormones, implicated in breast cancer and liver disease

Soy protein isolate (processed soy extract) – causes cancer in animals

Carrageenan – causes leaky gut and inflammation

Sulfides – cause allergies and inflammation

Nitrates and nitrites (in processed deli meats) – cause cancer , alter the neurological system, alter behavior. 7

Microwave popcorn – contains PFOA, a synthetic chemical linked to cancer and hormone disruption8

industrial food additives like emulsifiers such as polysorbate 80 or lecithin (commonly found in vitamins, chewing gum, and ice cream) – all linked to autoimmunity9

Sodium benzoate – increased anxiety and caused motor impairments in animals.

Polysorbate 80 – autoimmunity

MSG Headaches, allergies and damages gut flora, MSG is an excitotoxin, which means it overexcites your cells to the point of damage or death, causing brain dysfunction and damage to varying degrees — and potentially even triggering or worsening learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and more.
High Fructose Corn Syrup  Damaging your liver in the same way alcohol and other toxins do. HFCS has been shown to be associated with insulin resistance, hypertension and impaired glucose tolerance. 10
Refined Oils/Hydrogenated Oils/Transfats Processed foods, also referred to as frankenfoods, contain a lot of ingredients, like hydrogenated oils (partially canola, soybean, corn, and other vegetable oils) that damage the gut flora and give rise to intestinal inflammation, leading to chronic illnesses like leaky gut.

Transfats lead to inflammation, immune dysfunction, interfere with enzymes your body uses to fight cancer, interfere with insulin receptors in your cell membranes, problems with reproduction, increase bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol, raising the risk of heart attacks, promote obesity, insulin resistance, prediabetes, diabetes type 2, cancer and dementia.11

Refined oils contain pro-inflammatory omega 6 fats that lead to gut dysfunction/leaky gut, interfere with normal cell metabolism and are hazardous to our health increasing our chances of heart disease.

GMO/ Pesticides  Glyphoside was linked to cancer by the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), increases autoimmunity. Pesticides were engineered to contain Bt toxins, which kill insects by destroying their digestive lining, and glyphosate doubles as an antibiotic, disrupting our guts also. The pesticide disrupts the microbiome, compromises the ability to detoxify toxins, depletes vitamin D and other key nutrients, and can mimic hormones like estrogen, which can lead to cancers. The pesticide can be linked to a fourfold increase of celiac disease and other autoimmune conditions, according to 270 studies compiled by MIT in 2013.

Processed foods also contain genetically modified plants like corn, soybeans, and more than 750 different products that contain high levels of glyphosate, an active ingredient in the weed killer Roundup. As it turns out, this chemical is very active in disrupting beneficial bacteria,12 leading to leaky gut, imbalanced gut bacteria, and damage to the intestinal wall.

Sugar Sugar can directly be related to all chronic disease, like heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes, and has no redeeming nutritional value. Sugar feeds the bad bacteria in the gut creating cravings for sugar. This also interferes with the ability of your white blood cells to destroy toxins and fight infections making you sick. Sugar disrupts your blood sugar balance, with insulin spikes that can be dangerous and can lead to fatigue and brain fog, anxiety, and mood swings; reduces HDL (“good” cholesterol) and raises LDL (“bad” cholesterol); cause weight gain and accumulation of belly fat; increase your appetite and sugar cravings; and also leads to fatty liver. Sugar also increases oxidative stress, leading to inflammation. So basically, sugar makes you obese, old, and ill.13

How Do Impure Foods Lead to Disease?

Impure foods (artificial/GMO) can lead to disease by unbalancing our gut microbiome and disrupting our hormones. How? Let’s talk about that in a little bit more detail:

Importance of Digestive Health

The difference between someone with a chronic condition and someone without is there environment. The biggest connection between our insides and our outsides is our gut. Science shows that the gut is the gateway to health, as it houses 70-80% of the immune system, and 100 trillion bacteria that dictate our health and even effect our genes! SubhanAllah!!!! This is exactly what Allah (SWT) has been telling us all along! Our gut is the gateway to our health.

Allah’s Messenger said, “The stomach is the central basin of the body, and the veins are connected to it. When the stomach is healthy, it passes on its condition to veins, and in turn the veins will circulate the same and when the stomach is putrescence, the veins will absorb such putrescence and issue the same” – Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The child of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach. Sufficient for the child of Adam are a few morsels to keep his back straight. If he must eat more, then a third should be for his food, a third for his drink, and a third left for air.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhî (2380) and Musnad Ahmad)

Impurities can lead to an imbalance in our gut bacteria leading to so many chronic disease, including depression, anxiety, autism, autoimmunity and even cancer. Our gut bacteria can even affecting our gene code and our brains (through the vagus nerve). SubhanAllah! So Allah (SWT) knew that what we put in our bodies, effects everything including our minds and decisions.

Healthy Gut vs Leaky Gut

Impurities = Leaky Gut, Chronic Disease and Poor Choices

Impure Foods/Lifestyle Lead to Disease and Overeating

Impure foods/lifestyle lead to insulin and leptin resistance. Insulin manages our glucose levels and leptin that helps with satiation. With leptin and insulin resistance, leads to hormone imbalances, inflammation, over eating and chronic disease of every stripe. One doesn’t know when they are full so continue to eat.

That was mentioned to the ProphetMohamed_peace_be_upon_him , who then said, A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food) and a non-believer eats in seven intestines (eats much). (Sahih Bukhari)

Impure foods/lifestyle leads to increased intestinal permeability and insulin/leptin resistance, that leads to chronic diseases affecting how we think and believe. In order to optimize digestion, balance hormones and glucose levels and to lower inflammation, we need to eat the Prophetic (S) Way!
