Components of every Prophetic Rx

As of 2012, about half of all adults have one or more chronic health conditions. One of four adults has two or more chronic health conditions, and, sadly, this number continues to grow at an alarming rate. More and more patients are looking for an integrative, functional, holistic approach to help prevent and/or heal chronic disease, getting them back on the road to wellness, but can be confusing…let me help you clear the waters and focus on the key basics. For that, you will need to focus on the root of chronic disease and chronic symptoms…inflammation.

Modern Research Supports Quran and Sunnah

“Everything good that happens to you (O Man) is from God, everything bad that happens to you is from your own actions”. (Quran 4:79)

We know that chronic disease is due to inflammation. Our lifestyle is key in preventing and healing chronic disease and inflammation! Yes, genes may be a factor but your environment can turn those genes on and off (epigenetics)! With bad diets, chemicals in our environment, increased stress, lack of sleep, bad social environment and a lack of connection with the soul, can all lead to inflammation, leading to chronic inflammation!

Chronic Illness in Quran and Sunnah

Hadith reported by Abu Hurairah that, “Allah never inflicts a disease unless he makes a cure for it…” (Sahih Bukhari).

Healing and Preventing Chronic Disease

“And if God touches thee with affliction, none can remove it but He: if He touches thee with happiness He has power over all things.” (Quran 6:17).

Our bodies, our health, our children are all gifts from God. We need to take care of these trusts the best we know how, inshaAllah! So let’s talk about the relationship between chronic disease and inflammation.

Chronic disease and Inflammation

Inflammation is the common denominator among chronic disease. The increased rate of chronic illness we see in our society is a direct outcome of increased rates of inflammation. Chronic inflammation gradually destroys an otherwise beautiful system.

Chronic inflammation is that hidden smoldering fire created by your immune system as it tries to fight off unhealthy food, stress, toxins, allergens, an overgrowth of bad “bugs”, and even low-grade infections. These triggers all cause an increase in the release of inflammatory molecules of your immune system called cytokines. Cytokines are important in fighting off infection and cancer, and they help your body distinguish between friend and foe. However, when inflammatory cytokines get out of control, they cause chronic diseases of every stripe and not only cause damage in vascular tissues and organs but cause damage throughout all body tissues1. This self-perpetuating cycle is the common denominator of most chronic diseases and difficult-to-explain symptoms, including celiac disease. Even symptoms that may accompany the main disease like depression/mood disorders, thyroid disease, digestive issues, skin disorders, or more general symptoms like pain and fatigue. These seem like different problems, but they actually have one thing in common: inflammation — the root of most chronic diseases.

Unfortunately, most of us are suffering from one or more of these disorders but have no idea how to eliminate inflammation. Most doctors are utilizing pharmaceuticals in lieu of getting to the root cause, but this strategy simply “band-aids” the issues, until it becomes unmanageable.  To truly be effective at managing and/or hopefully overcoming a disease, we need to address these processes at every level. Answering the question: “What is causing the inflammation, and how do we treat it most effectively?”

Let’s focus on the key components as deficits on the following can cause inflammation:

Purity Heals

“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.”(Quran 2:168)

“And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.” (Quran 5:88)

“He makes Lawful to them the goodly pure things and forbids them from harmful impurely things” (Quran 7:157)

“(People), consume the pure and lawful sustenance which God has given to you and thank God for his bounty if you are His true worshippers.” (Quran 16:114)

“Eat of the good things we have provided for your sustenance, but commit no excess therein, lest my wrath should justly descend on you, and those on whom descends my wrath do perish indeed” (Quran 20:81)

Allah emphasizes in the Quran about the importance of consuming lawful and pure.

Digestive Health and Detoxification

Digestive Health

With the gut being the largest gate between the environment and our internal environment, it is an integral part of healing and or prevention of disease. With 70-80 % of the immune system located in the digestive system, it is critical to keep this part healthy. To keep us in good health, our gut relies on carefully maintaining a symbiotic relationship with trillions of microorganisms. These bacteria need an optimal environment to do their job. But if that environment is compromised via chronic stress, environmental toxins, inflammatory foods, chronic infections, medications, etc—these good “bugs” die off and get replaced by bad “bugs” that don’t do their job well. This imbalance leads to things getting through that shouldn’t be getting through, called leaky gut syndrome, and a fire results in your body as 70-80% of your immune system tries to defend its borders. Through the gut, the immune cells, when activated, release many, many inflammatory molecules that travel throughout the body and causing inflammation in our joints, skin, blood vessels, brain—everywhere, you name it! Improving your digestive health by removing the offending agents (grains, dairy, sugar, processed foods, alcohol, other food sensitivities), replacing with key nutrients like veggies, clean protein, healthy fat and adequate hydration, replacing with probiotics and prebiotics, resealing with bone broth and gut healing nutrients (like fish oil and vitamin D) and rebalancing the body (nutrition, detoxification, and the four big S’s) is an essential way to overcome inflammation and chronic disease.

Allah’s Messenger said, “The stomach is the central basin of the body, and the veins are connected to it. When the stomach is healthy, it passes on its condition to veins, and in turn the veins will circulate the same and when the stomach is putrescence, the veins will absorb such putrescence and issue the same” – Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

Science shows that the gut is the gateway to health, as it houses 70-80% of the immune system and 100 trillion bacteria that dictate our health and even effect our genes! SubhanAllah!!!!

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The child of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach. Sufficient for the child of Adam are a few morsels to keep his back straight. If he must eat more, then a third should be for his food, a third for his drink, and a third left for air.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhî (2380) and Musnad Ahmad)

Impurities can lead to an imbalance in our gut bacteria leading to so many chronic disease, including depression, anxiety, autism, autoimmunity and even cancer. Our gut bacteria can even affecting our gene code and our brains (thereby effecting our decisions through the vagus nerve). SubhanAllah! In order to optimize digestion, balance hormones and glucose levels and to lower inflammation, we need to eat the Prophetic (S) Way

Nutrition and Insulin Resistance

Nutrition- Halal and Tayyib ….Why aren’t we focusing on the Tayyib?

“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth which is lawful and goodly and don’t follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed he is to you a clear enemy.” (Quran 2:168)

“O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.” (Quran 2: 172)

“He makes Lawful to them the goodly pure things and forbids them from harmful impurely things” (Quran 7:157)

“(People), consume the pure and lawful sustenance which God has given to you and thank God for his bounty if you are His true worshippers.” (Quran 16:114)

Especially when it is mentioned so many times in the Quran, is it possible for something to be halal and yet not tayyib i.e. to be lawful and yet somehow not good for us?

We have been instructed to be mindful and thankful. Our bodies are a trust upon us,

But waste not by excess for God loves not the wasters” (Quran 7:31).

According to scholars, anything that is excessive or is unhealthy and contains artificial ingredients are not tayyib. So need to get back to the REAL TAYYIB!

An impure lifestyle can lead to prediabetes/insulin resistance and diabetes leading to more chronic illnesses. This is a growing problem that leads to inflammation and is an integral part that needs to be addressed for healing and prevention of disease. Anything that causes insulin resistance will cause inflammation, and vise versa. Insulin resistance results in rapid and premature aging, along with diseases like heart disease, stroke, dementia, and cancer. So whenever you eat, your food should meet three criteria.

  1. Keep your gut happy.  Paying extra attention to your diet is crucial to stopping the inflammation where it starts and gets to the root of your problem (ask discussed in the previous chapter).
  2. Glucose is regulated-decreases insulin resistance and balances hormones.  Insulin resistance is a condition where your body stops becomes “numb” to the insulin, focus on foods that will stabilize insulin and glucose levels and thereby also other hormones.
  3. Nutrient dense. Focusing on foods that are nutrient dense, provides your body with the strength it needs to heal inside and out. Nutrient density creates resilience.

Fixing Deficiencies

Living healthy and boosting immunity always starts with diet and can’t be replaced. Nutritional deficiencies can interfere with you getting better, so supplementing can give you the extra boost you need to expedite healing. Supplements can give you the extra push in the right direction towards healing, supporting the immune system allowing it to be healthy and balanced.

Detoxification

Toxins and impurities are all around us and are often invisible. Slow regular exposure can cause the toxins to accumulate in our bodies and depend on your liver to remove these toxins. A high body burden of toxins can prevent you from losing weight, or worse, damage your metabolism.  Clean eating and lifestyle is key, but some people have accumulated such a high body burden of persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals (mercury, lead, arsenic, etc.) that they need additional support for detoxification using detox-boosting foods, supplements, herbs, saunas, and sometimes chelating medication to get rid of heavy metals (to be done under a doctor’s supervision).

The Four Big S’s

Stress

With stress causing more than 80% of the complaints that present to primary care, discussing stress management is essential in healing and prevention of disease. This is part of mind-body medicine, a branch of integrative medicine, that looks at one’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions and how it affects physical health and how your physical health affects your spiritual and emotional well-being and refers to your overall psychological well-being. When mind-body techniques such as meditation, guided relaxation, and guided imagery are practiced regularly, they can have a powerful positive effect on you and your health. One can also reframe the stress as a test from God, and in remembrance and prayer, one can release that stress to a higher power.

Tests from God

“Be sure We will test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives, but give glad tidings to those who are steadfast, who say when afflicted with calamity: To God we belong and to Him is our return. They are those on whom (descend) blessings from God and mercy and they are the ones that receive guidance.” (Qur’an 2:155)

Remembrance is healing

“O mankind! There has come to you a direction from you Lord, and a healing for (the disease in your) heart, and for those who believe a guidance, and mercy. (Qur’an 10:57)

Meditation, yoga, deep breathing are healing= Prayer

Increase Dhikr (remembrance of God).
“He guides to Himself those who turn to Him in penitence – Those who have believed and whose heart have rest in the remembrance of God. Verify in the remembrance of God, do hearts find rest”. (Qur’an 13:27-28)

Be constant in their prayers.
“O you who believe, seek help with steadfastness and prayer. For God is with those who are steadfast”. (Qur’an 2:153)

By incorporating these techniques, you can teach your body different kinds of responses to a situation so that the body doesn’t turn on the damaging hormones, maintaining a balanced inner world preventing and help heal any chronic illness you may have.

Exercise

Exercise is soo anti-inflammatory and helps significantly with stress relief. Prophet (S) used to walk at a fast pace even race with his wife, Aisha (R). He used to work with his hands all the time, in the kitchen, in the home and when he was out.  He has advised all Muslims to teach their children swimming, archery and horse riding.

Sleep

During the eight or nine hours of sleep that our body requires, it doesn’t consume as much energy, which leaves more available energy for toxin removal, hormone manufacture, and infection fighting. When we fail to get enough rest, our bodies may not complete those important tasks, increasing the chance of developing problems due to excess toxins, inflammation, and hormone imbalances.

Social

Social environment is important for overall health as the feelings of being loved releases a flood of potent hormones into our blood streams, which makes us feel better emotionally with the added benefit of strengthening our immune systems significantly. Receiving love from those around us helps the body heal itself. So keep people around you that will lift you up and not drag you down. You are sooo worth it!!!

Prophet Muhammad said that a person would be influenced by his friends, and he warned that everyone should look carefully at those they consider to be their friends (At Tirmidhi, Ahmad, Abu Dawood).

“The example of the believers, in their mutual love and mercy for one another is like the example of one body, if one part feels pain, then all of the body suffers in sleeplessness and fever.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

“The Believer to the Believer is like a solid building, one part supporting the other.”(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

‘The example of the Believers in their mutual love and mercy is like the example of a body. If one part feels pain, then all of it is affected by sickness and fever.’ (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

“And (remember) the Day when the wrong-doer will bite on his hand, he will say: ‘Oh!  Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger.  Ah!  Woe to me!  Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend!  He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (the Quran) after it had come to me.’” (Quran 25:27)

Whoever conceals (the fault of) a Muslim, God will conceal his fault on the Day of Judgment.” Abu Dawood.

In his traditions, Prophet Muhammad said, “A person visited his brother in another town and God sent an angel to wait for him on his way.  The angel said, “Where do you intend to go?”  The man answered, “I intend to go to my brother in this town.” The angel said, “Have you done any favor to him, the repayment of which you intend to get?” He said: “No, I love him for the sake of God, the Exalted and Glorious.” Thereupon the angel said, “I am a messenger to you from God to inform you that God loves you as you love him.” (Sahih Muslim)

“None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

The Muslim’s prayer for his absent brother will be answered.  There is an angel at his head who, whenever he prays for his brother, says, Ameen, and you shall have likewise.

Do not have malice against a Muslim; do not be envious of other Muslims; do not go against a Muslim and forsake him.  Oh the slaves of Allah!  Be like brothers with each other.  It is not violable for a Muslim to desert his brother for over three days. (Sahih Muslim)

“Content yourself with those who pray to their Lord morning and evening, seeking His approval, and do not let your eyes turn away from them out of desire for the attractions of this worldly life, and do not yield to those whose hearts We have made heedless of Our remembrance, those who follow their own low desires, those whose ways are unbridled.” (Quran 18:28)

Spiritual

As we are all mind, body and soul, healing the soul is an important aspect in prevention and healing of disease. Scientific studies indicate the positive relationship between spirituality and health. When the thinking mind stops and spiritual energy begins to flow through you, and causes the following healthy changes in the physical body especially if one practices them daily. Spirituality effects the physical body by improving blood circulation, decreasing blood pressure, improving digestion and detoxification, turns off unhealthy genes and helps in improving the overall immune system. So focus on 10 things every morning that you are thankful for. Positivity heals from the inside out!

The importance of positivity is all over in the Quran. Allah (SWT) uses the strongest language in the Quran, as he promises and swears to it that he promises he will increase you if we are grateful. The beauty of this is that Allah (SWT) doesn’t specify what he will increase us in and who we need to be thankful to. No specifications, so it makes it even more beautiful that the combinations are endless. Alhumdulillah! I’m grateful for you!

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.” (Quran 14:7)

Adjusting the Holistic Rx for your Condition

Everyone has different puzzle pieces—now we just gotta figure out which ones don’t fit or are missing to complete that beautiful master piece and get you to where you want. Getting labs is always key, so work with your primary care provider to get an initial set of lab tests. Base line labs I get on my patients are CBC, CMP, fasting insulin, fasting lipids, homocysteine, hsCRP, vitamin D, HbA1c, TSH and thyroid antibodies, ANA, B12 and magnesium.
